Pre-Thanks Cooking

Today Alex and Caitlin spent much of the day in the kitchen preparing for The Epic 47th Street House Thanksgiving Feast Extravaganza.

On the menu:

Chrissy's making:
Mashed taters
Roasted ass chicken
Chicken Gravy
Green Bean Casserole (with bacon possibly making an appearance)

Alex's making:
"Hippy Dippy Vegan Shit", i.e. Lentil Cashew Lofe
The Freshest Cranberry Sauce (with Ginger)
Mushroom Gravy
Vegetable Stock, for the gravy and the stuffing
Stuffing

Caitlin's making:
Cranberry Orange Nut Bread (and Muffins)
Okra and Tomatoes
Key Lime Pie

So here are some sweet prep shots of the dishes and the chefs:

Alex chops celery for his Hippy Dippy Vegan Shit

This may look like a somewhat gloppy cat food at the moment, but tomorrow it will be a glorious vegan Thanksgiving masterpiece

Okra, prepped for Okra and Tomatoes, one of Caitlin's all-time favorite dishes. Fresh from Worden Farm!

Muffins of Glory.

The loaf version of above muffins.

Cranberries and ginger. Freaking awesome combo.

Casey, Devin, Zac, Tacy and Hannah are all out of town with family for Thanksgiving, and while Evan is still in town, he'll be with family up in Bradenton for the day, so we're having a motley crüe of wonderful people over for dinner.

Caitlin, who is a champion at sleeping in, woke up early this morning with such excitement about the coming cooking (and resultant, impending eating), that she was unable to stay in bed and laze. Alex joined in and then they listened to the new Kanye album and Captain Beefheart and Dirty Projectors and now tomorrow will be super easy.

Breakfast Love

Casey and Evan satiated their morning appetite with an egg in the hole made with a jalapeno - corn hot cake and Winn-Dixie "jumbo" eggs.  This delicious dish can also be referred to as "egg in the basket" or a "cowboy egg".  Do you know any other terms for this culinary delight?

The heart represents true love.

Yummy!

Hasil Atkins - "She Said"

This was the soundtrack to that salad.

Foody Fun Time

After a grueling day of work at the Sarasota Farmer's Market, Chrissy and Caitlin came home with some wonderful spoils of their labor, which prompted us to make this delicious salad:

Arugula, tat soi, mizuna, mustard greens, kina savoi, red leaf lettuce, green peppers, french breakfast radishes, dill, scallions, and parsley all brought to us by the lovely Worden Farm; fresh grilled grouper from Maggie's Seafood Stand, carmelized onions a la Alex Cline, and homemade ginger miso dressing! here's a quick and easy recipe:

Ginger Miso Dressing
  1. 4 tbsp. miso
  2. 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  3. 1/2 cup canola oil
  4. 1 cup water
  5. a good hunk of ginger, chopped
Combine all ingredients in a blender (we used a magic bullet) and blend to creamy perfection! For an added kick, throw some chopped scallions in there. Those measurements were completely arbitrary, so don't be afraid to combine your flavors to taste!

This meal makes for a happy Alex!

Here's some family fun at meal time. This was our Cuban food night.
Complete with platanos maduros and mojitos with a South Florida touch: starfruit!
